Temptations

By Tom | August 2, 2008

Temptations

A decision is set firm
In the depths of my mind
I go through life aware
Of what to set behind
I talk and preach
Of what I do not do
And say what others
Should not pursue
I live my life with
My mind on straight
And set out from the beginning
With what to hate
A passion burns
Within my heart
Of what I never
Wish to start
And I move in life
With a place to point
To a place where
I shall not disappoint

And that one thing
Stares me in the face
And without the strength of Christ
I’ll do what I distaste.

Breakthrough

By Tom | June 9, 2008

Breakthrough

I have been born, the younger of two
And many people saw me right through
Mother had a grateful love
But had no thought to show that love.

I grew up in many places
I struggled through life’s many mazes
I tried really hard, and fell right down
But I stood back up when I hit the ground.

After many times of stand and fall
I learned in life to give your all.
I started soon, to come out on top,
And after a while, I could not be stopped.

And then they came, and said of me,
“Your smarter than me, just look and see”
“For you were given so many thoughts”
“I’m jealous of you, you have lots”

“I look your way, your so great”
“I was a failure, that was my fate”
“You were given everything at birth”
“I was given nothing, that’s for sure”

The thing to behold, as I do say
Is nothing was handed freely my way
The fact that separates me from you
Is the work you don’t, but I choose to do.

“You have everything that I want” he said
You have it too, it’s in your head
“I am different than you are”
“I have nothing, see? Your so far”

“You are smart, smarter than me”
THEN WHY DON’T YOU LISTEN TO ME???

Leech

By Tom | May 4, 2008

Leech

The realm of psychedelic colors
Causing emotive to their eyes
Embalming in their minds
And through the sands of time.

Those who perceive it only as a dream
Or take its seduction
They will fail
With lost minds in disproduction.

The fearful thrive, with unbroken eyes
To discover a way from their slumber
Living in an unconscious state
Filling their minds with lumber.

Only once before, the hue this way
But withdrawn was hate and pain
Only once before when things were safe
Soon all shall lead to bad or good fate.

We lie right down and feel the high
As we look up towards the stellar sky.
Us and old friends beyond our fights
Oh what did happen, on that summer night.

Solution

By Tom | March 30, 2008

Solution

A piece of time ticks fast away
We all dream of many happy days
We dwindle in mind, mood, and age
We love to see kids in another stage
And to imitate them in all aspects
Without thinking of many prospects
We could fall to a far vast sea
Deeply, we find sanction only in we
If only other things were known,
Other minds could then be sown
If only care did exist,
Kids would not live in the mist
I wish there were a way
So to help, as the parents say
Fault of child?…Never blame,
For it is the parents that are put to shame
If only they could just be helped,
Our society would not be scalped
Looking for help?…Foolishly
Prevention…it is the only key.

Homecoming

By Tom | March 20, 2008

Homecoming

In charades of broken lights,
Lying in the darkness of the night.
The night of fun, fulfilling dreams,
The best of nights, as all would seem.

Driving down unbroken lines,
In the depth of no passing signs,
Around the curve, double lights,
Enter the darkness of the night.

Lying there in another mind,
Your life to death as you did sign.
In your unconscious dreams,
There is here as you do see.

Your fun fulfilling night,
Caused another deathly fright.
Dead are you and others too,
For you have killed a mother of two.

In the dark, you signed your death,
With toast for fun, you caused a mess.
What happened was not your sight,
That nice, great day, Homecoming night.

The World is Passing

By Tom | March 18, 2008

My Christian poem, Transient World, I try to show that this world as we know it, is passing.  It is very easy to look around us and see that although the world is always changing, it also always seems to be here.  This is to counter the ‘disputer of the day’ that are discussed in a group of people in 1 Corinthians 1:20.  This is the person that argues that this world will not end unless we, as people, end it…or that there is no creator…or that there is no morality.  The disputer is the philosopher, but I would like to quote from John MacArthur on his commentary on this passage: “We do not need philosophy because if it is correct, it agrees with the Bible and we do not need it…if it is false, it does not agree with the Bible, and we don’t want it!”

This world is coming to an end, believe it or not, the Bible is quite clear that it was created by a God who will come back to redeem it.  I will leave the details of that redemption to each reader, I just want you to be sure that you are ready for that time.  If you are not, read the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Repent and believe! If you are ready, I implore you to stop living as if the world will not pass away.  Remember your commission, and give your life to Christ because of the price He has paid for you.

Transient World

By Tom | March 17, 2008

Transient World

Oh, this transient world,
Woe to those who think it stays
Woe to those who put their faith
In the things of the earth

Oh, this transient world,
We look upon it with our phenomenal eyes
We perceive its conception was eternity
And that it will survive

Oh, this transient world,
A passing blip on the radar screen
Of the heavenly Host above
A ground to try and test those for eternity

Oh, this transient world,
Its passage is like the sleeping night
Quick is the relative time
To the line of the One above

Oh, this transient world,
I see the pain of your fight
I see the trauma of those abound
Caught in a snare to the ground

Oh, this transient world,
How you taunt the ones who think
You will survive until the end of times
Whole and unbroken

Oh, this transient world,
See the heavenly Host above
Watch as He guides His hand
For the love of His chosen

Oh, this transient world,
You know you can never last
Looking up to the power of the One who is
Waiting patiently for the end of your abode

Oh, this transient world,
We can think this is all there is
We can look around and gather our treasure
And store up the things for the grave

Oh, this transient world,
Wait for the ones above
Meaning is found in the love we share
Meaning is passing the love, the truth, the faith

Oh, this transient world,
Meaning is found not in your pleasure
But you die in your passionate lusts
In the uncontrolled heart of the desire to take

Oh, this transient world,
Cast off the pain of self desire
You seek the pleasure in your flesh
To the empty soul as you cry yourself to sleep

Oh, this transient world,
Peace is found at the glory
Of the Holy Host from above
Who says meaning is found by His ways

Oh, this transient world,
When will you realize
His statutes make you pure
His grace is abounding love

Oh, this transient world,
When comes to pass away
Where will you be and what will you do
Your focus is so true

Oh, this transient world,
It will all come to and end
And when it does, woe the cries
Of the suffering

Oh, this transient world,
How the end will surely come
How the eyes of the blind will be widened
By Your coming on the clouds

Oh, this transient world,
Only those who learn the truth
Will be glorified
To the eternal world to come

My Raging Emotions

By Tom | March 7, 2008

My poem Emotions was written after a very long walk when I was 16 years old.  I was depressed for some reason, I haven’t a clue why, but that was not uncommon during that period of time in my life.  It was a warm, but very windy day.  I began a walk through the back roads behind the house and toward the plaza just outside town.  As I was walking, I encountered a neighbor, said hello, but did not stop.  Too much was on my mind to stop, not that I would have anyway!  I just wanted to be alone with the thoughts and feelings inside of me.  I had no other way of expressing myself than writing, so after I arrived at home, I wrote out the feelings in this nice little poem that has always been a favorite of mine.

Thinking back now, this poem is one of my early confessions of my heart.  I was not confessing things to anyone in particular because I did not know God at this point in time, but I was writing out what I was feeling nevertheless.  It is important to be in touch with our feelings and thoughts, and even to express them in some form (music, poetry, talking, etc.)  Men in particular have difficulty in this self-expression, but if you examine the rich confessions found within the text of scripture, you learn that it is your heart of stone that hides feelings rather than your heart of flesh.  I urge you to understand yourself, then you will see your need for Jesus Christ, for you will see the sin inside yourself.

Emotions

By Tom | March 6, 2008

Emotions

Walking down the lonely path
Only pleasantness on my mind
No pressures dealing
Within the depths of my mind.

I was walking along and suddenly
I stumbled on the presence
Of another person of whom
I was in her presence.

Spoken in words to comprehend
And drag myself from slumber
Answering in a phrase
Then returning my mind to slumber.

Thoughts arose and so did the wind
Picking up speed to travel
From cerebral to columns
Severe nerves did travel.

Among them fear, destiny, and hate
Likeness, happy, sad, and even mad
All emotions hitting me
Out of delusion, and nerve ends going mad.

Cardiac is pumping
With a vigorous force
Pumping all over me
With its brutal force.

Slowly, I return to the state
That was once called normal
Anguish was depleted
While I returned back to normal.

A deeper feeling is now possessed
Then mental states allow
Never before was is felt
Even though I did allow.

Only once, I felt this way
Once, and once alone
Standing in a state of anguish
Dealing with it alone.

Slowly dropping to a deeper state
Than was at an hour before
Never have I felt this way
No, never once before.

I longed for pain and reticence
I wished to deal with it alone
For taciturnity is scintillating
And stimulating when you’re alone.

My mind is clear, yes finally
My heart is slower yet
My anguish gone and I
May stay sane, yes, even yet.

Experiencing Life Part 1

By Tom | March 4, 2008

Think back to your favorite memory and pause.  How about going to a memory that is not so favorite?  We all have those times when we wish that we did not do such and such.  Though it can be hard to face those moments, particularly when they occur, we can rest in this: they are our very own teachable moments.  We can either learn from these moments, or else we can ignore them and probably do the same fool thing over again!

My poem Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust is the first of a series of poems that I wrote concerning my life experiences as a youth.  The more interesting point regarding these poems is that they are written about my youth, but also written in my youth!  I believe I was 16 when this particular poem was penned.  The poem once again expresses my dark childhood, but the focus directs the reader to the changes that we all encounter in life.  I had good times (light) and bad times (darkness).  In such an environment, a person usually becomes numb, or as I expressed, ‘dull’.  The first stanza is primarily describing the external situations and how they pass one after the other.  The second stanza was the internal change.  Then I switch back to describe the external and how things got ‘light’ again after I made a friend in life, but things turned again when I moved away and lost contact.  The fourth stanza examines my ‘rebellion’ when I did not fit in with the popular kids, so us misfits all fit in with each other and without cause despised the people that were not one of us.  But my heart changed again and I withdrew even from those friends.  The poem ends with a simple question, will this new friendship end?

From my Christian perspective looking back on this poem, I would like to tackle a few points of philosophy.  This poem was written six full years before I would receive Jesus Christ, but notice how I play with the absolutes of darkness and light.  Even for me, who openly both hated and rejected God (figure that one out sometime), I could not let go of the concept of the absolute, and that darkness was the bad side of the deal!  This is what Romans 1 refers to when Paul says that we are without excuse because God made Himself known through the creation.  It is also consistent with the classic argument of right and wrong by C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity.  Another interesting observation is that I am cataloging life as an on-going process, and indeed, that is much like we should be doing.  If we are not learning from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.  I think of the Israelites and the book of Chronicles which is a reminder against repeating the past.  This book was written upon returning from exile to enable them to remember the God that made them promises, and what happens when they turn away from Him.  This poem of mine is my way of knowing where I came from so that hopefully, I can learn from my mistakes and move on in life to better things.
